Test drive: 2007 Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG Wagon
Test drive: 2007 MercedesBenz E63 AMG Wagon Monday July 23, 2007 If there's anything I like better than a fast car, it's a fast car that doesn't look fast and the MercedesBenz E63 AMG wagon may well be the stealthiest speeder I've ever driven. I'd love to buy one of these, pry off the AMG badges, replace the AMG wheels with a set of stock E350 wheels (provided they'd fit over the E63's huge brakes), and go about my business of regularly breaking the speed limit with complete anonymity. Yep, if I were I going to buy an E63 AMG, there's no question I'd opt for the wagon. Of course, with prices starting at nearly $90k, I won't be buying one any time soon... Check out my 2007 MercedesBenz E63 AMG test drive, then tell me if you had the cash to drop on an E63, would you go for the sedan or the station wagon? I’m a Dad, so I’d take the wagon. July 23, 2007 at 11:47 am(2) Frank says: I just don’t see how anyone could spend that much on a Mercedes with the wellpublicized reliability problems of the past 8 years. I love MB cars I just keep telling myself I can’t fall for the urge to get one because it will lead to heartbreak. July 23, 2007 at 3:36 pm(3) gary says: It is not a Mercedes. It is a AMG. They are completely different from the miserable ML’s they build in Birmingham bringing down the rest of the companies reputation. The Mercedes is hand assembled by true automotive engineers. You will be driving one of the finist vehicles on the planet. I do not believe that the problems that plague the lower end rides affect the AMG models. I amy be wrong. But I do know that when you want that level of performance you take a risk with any car you buy. Porsche, Audi, and BMW all have miserable quality reputations. Ferrari’s and Lambo’s are undrivable in most cities. My friends f430 will not pass emmissions and the dealership is not offering any help. Jaguars are trash. Aston Martins don’t hold up well either to regular driving. The Japanese have yet to build a car with any soul stirring passion. I think for a daily driver the AMG is the car to drive. They make a pretty bad ass F1 car as well. If your worried buy the extended warranty. At least the Merc holds its resale value. None of the others even come close. Just look at the prices of an Audi S8 or a Jaguar coup that is a coupld of years old. Now try a find a Merc E55. huge resale price difference. July 23, 2007 at 8:53 pm(4) Frank says: I don’t think the AMGs are immune to the build quality problems. I don’t think it’s a lowerend of the family issue. I believe the SClass has its fair share of reliability problems. I’ve owned 4 Porsche’s, 2 Mercedes, 2 BMWs and 1 Audi (and 1 Alfa). I get the “soul stirring” argument and the complaint that Japanese cars are soulless. I may have to go soulless until Mercedes and BMW and the others create confidence that the quality is there. July 24, 2007 at 10:54 am(5) Kurt says: The AMG engine may be handbuilt, but the rest of the car is still Mercedes. That being said, Mercedes has recently changed suppliers for many electronic components used in their vehicles, which should vastly improve the reliability of the entire line. The latest J.D. Power initial quality ratings moved Mercedes up from the pits to near the top. I drive a 2007 CLS550, and, although I haven’t had it long enough to really gauge how reliable it is (4K miles so far), I do think that even the 382 horsepower of the 550 is for the most part wasted in the USA. So why then put this awesome AMG powerplant into a station wagon, particularly when that wagon isn’t the bestlooking wagon around (at least from the outside)? July 24, 2007 at 4:32 pm(6) fordson says: Nice car. But my heap will kick the crud out of any amg that dares rev its engine at it. July 29, 2007 at 10:42 am(7) hawaiian don says: Maybe it’s just me, but for the life of me, I just cant see spending nearly 100k on a stationwagon! October 10, 2007 at 3:15 pm(8) Charles D says: I bought the sedan E63 8 months ago and it is one amazing car. I had a 2005 C55 before and enjoyed the more sports car feel of the C. But if you want a true high performance luxury car it doesn’t get any better than the E63. And Fordson are you serious your heap does 060 in less than 4.2 seconds and the quarter in under 12.5?
