Mercedes 300SD Timing Chain
Questions and Answers
Mercedes 300SD Timing Chain
Q.
Hello Mr. Ciulla, I recently purchased an 1983 Mercedes Benz 300SD from a friend. He had been the owner for about 15 years. The car runs and drives great with 326,000 miles. I am sure the timing chain has never been changed. Are there other things that have to do with the timing chain that should be changed as well?
I am trying to decide whether to do it now or later? How long can I go?
Thank you,
Brennan
A. I can replace the timing chain on that engine in a little over two hours and all I have to remove is the valve cover. But since you can't do it that way, you will need to remove the whole front of the engine. A dirty and very messy job because, if it's a typical MB diesel, it has as much oil on it as in it.
I have seen timing chains last over 500,000 miles on this engine without any appreciable stretch. There is no maintenance interval on them so at this point you can replace it whenever circumstances permit.
There are several special MB service tools needed to do this job. You might be able to get away with out them and do the job. I would devote at least a day to do it.
