Questions and Answers Diesel Tachometer Q. Hello Vincent, I want to build a tachometer in my Nissan Sunny 2.0 D LX. The problem is that the car runs on diesel and thus has no ignition coil to pick up the signal from. I found out that it's possible to pick up the signal from the electric generator (dynamo) too. I have found a tachometer that was designed for a 6 cylinder car. My car has a 4 cylinder. Is it suitable for my car? And can a tachometer designed for gasolinecars be used in dieselcars (in general)? Thank you. Greetings from Holland, Milan A. I'm afraid that you won't be able to hook up a tachometer to that engine. To get a tach signal you need an ignition coil, which a diesel does not have as you know, or an RPM sensor such as Mercedes Benz has. Even at that, MB has a tach adapter to convert it to a signal a tachometer can understand. I don't know what year Sunny you have (nice car by the way. I've seen them but never really worked on them) or even if I did I wouldn't have a wiring diagram for it since they were not imported into the USA. It is possible there is a tach signal output in the ECU. If there is, you can use that for the tachometer. You'd have to check with the local Nissan Dealer about that or get a good wiring diagram. 4, 6 or 8 cylinder, gas or diesel doesn't matter to a tachometer. All it does is count impulses so it would work if your car can send out the signal. Additional Information provided courtesy of ALLDATA Back to Index
