Automotive Questions and Answers - German Spec Mercedes Benz
Questions and Answers
German Spec Mercedes Benz
Q. I looked through your index, but found no similar problem. I am in the USAF and this year I brought back [a bargain] under the classic car law. Plan is that one day it will be the carrot to entice my son to finish college. I have a 1974 450 SLC, unmodified all original German Spec that was my daily driver in Germany. When it arrived in the US port, it would not start.
Using the electrical schematic in my Haynes manual, I troubleshot it to the "transistorized ignition switching unit" which sits in the left wheel well with 4 wires running into the engine bay.
Wire 1) red to starter, has 12.3 vdc.
Wire 2) Brown = Ground ohms checks good.
Wire 3) Green/ylw to points and condenser, 12.3 vdc The points have 12.3 volts which drops to 4.3 vdc when the engine is cranked.
Wire 4) Black to coil : I have no voltage to the coil from the "TISU" with ignition off, on, or cranking.
Problem: $470.00 for a rebuilt part to test my limited troubleshooting ability. I replaced the points, coil, and condenser. No effect. What do you think?

A. Oh boy, this is going to be tough because I don't have anything on a German spec Mercedes Benz.
I think the best I can do is refer you to the MercedesBenz Club of America. They have the technical knowledge for the German MB you need to help you get the car running again.
A one year membership is $45.00, but it's well worth it for the storehouse of technical information on MB all over the world. I'm sorry I can't do better than that for you.
