Question: What has a 443 horsepower supercharged V8, two seats, goes 060 in less than 5 seconds, and comes from a famous American marque?
Answer: The 2007 Toyota Camry Hybrid.
Just kidding. I wanted to see if you were paying attention. The answer is, of course, Caddy's XLRV. Jason raises an interesting point in his test drive report: Sure, the 2006 Cadillac XLRV delivers a lot for your hundred grand, but is Caddy really ready to compete against the likes of Porsche, Maserati and Panoz? Nice but overprized. Also, interior materials are not up to the levels of other vehicles in this category BMW, MG, Audi, Porsche,…Like the reviewer, I would go for a Carrera S cabrio or a MB SL500 or AMG. Lastly, I can’t imagine spending 100K for a caddy not to mention that this car will depreciate very quickly. It may be worth waiting 1 or 2 years to purchase one used for 50K.

I stopped by GM cars about 3 years ago, when I was disappointed in Pontiac’s 1999 Grand Prix GTP and 2000 WS6 Trans Am, 2002 Chevy Tahoe, and 2003 Cadillac CTS. GM has increased quality and lines of vehicles, but is quickly taking a step back in appeal. GM’s problem is they don’t listen to consumers wants on any of their websites. GM’s interiors consist of a lot of plastic like many other manufacturers, but the big grey ugly knobs for radios a/c controls that pontiacs had for years vs. a matching flat black with chrome accented like Mercedes Benz is the difference makers, simple things. GM finally listened on their new lines of vechiles, but the problem is what use to be Luxury lines of vechiles are almost equal in initial cost. Like a MB ML350 and GM Envoy are about the same cost. MB holds its value better and up to recently all maintenance was cover for the first 50k miles. No wonder the US automanufacturers are in trouble. I will never buy another US car, but for the people that like to drive, German is the only way to go especially when cost is the same, and quality and depreciated value is higher.

I agree that GM didn’t have what people wanted 3 years ago, but the new products most of them are quite impressive. I’ve just be in the new Avalanche and GMC Yukons, and was more than impressed with overall quality of materials as well as fit and finish. Benz may hold its value because of past history, but that company is having more than its share of quality issues, especially related to the transmission.
What Jason failed to mention in the article is that the XLR is a Corvette C6 underneath, and the V is basically the Z06, of which I will be testing in a month. And I don’t know anyone who has anything bad to say about the Z06 Vette.
If you’ve ever spent any time on a racetrack with the VSeries, it’s worth every penny of the $100,000 sticker. But few people get the chance to experience these performance machines, and the same is true for Porsche and BMW owners who have no idea how capable their vehicles are in the handling department because the spend 90% of their time in them driving on flat, congested roads.
Maserati has its own set of quirks, the MB SL55 is $125,000, not $100,000; the Panoz has over 100 hp less than the XLR, and why in the world would anyone who owns a Viper or any other performance car put a Scion xB in the same garage??!!!

BJ Yes, the XLR is based on the Vette which is probably good. However, the interior of both of these cars is just lacking in quality. I would be willing to pay a few extra $K for a Vette if the interiors were to the level of an Audi or BMW or MB. GM’s prizing of the XLR V at $100K with all of the cheap plastic that is used in the cabin is completely out of touch with reality and terrible execution in product design (decision making process).

When are the AMerican companies going to get it? THey design beutiful cars for foreign manufacturers and we get this? The interior on this car is right on par with the Dodge Magnum Horrible! Im not sure what design school they are pulling from but it’s time to get on board with what works. Did we learn nothing from the Edsel? If you want to see what this car should look like, if they wanted to sell any, look at the Honda S2000. It’s what this Caddy would be if it weren’t so ugly!

What GM should understand is that when an individual spends $100k on an automobile, they are making a statement about who they are. Individuals with that kind of purchasing power will not want the GM logo as their personal statement.

If the car is based on the Corvette, why does it cost so much more? Personally, I think it’s ugly. I’d buy the new BMW M6 Coupe for the same money any day of the week!

The main issue with American cars is the quality of the interior. If you can get an Import for the same cost 10 out ot 10 times buy it.

I love the Cadillac CTSV and the XLRV. I am obsessed with the Cadillac VSeries. The horsepower you get for the price is worth every penny BUT the only thing i dont like is their interior design. I personally like the CTSV cause its a SportsSedan with four seats but its interior is so ugly which hopefully they are going to fix in 2008. I think GM is going to be the best company as soon as Toyota buys it buys it.
