Mercedes Benz 300D Transmission
Q. Howdy, I have a 1979 Mercedes 300D in the shop for an automatic transmission overhaul/rebuild. Car has 215,000 miles. Engine is good and dry, rebuilt 53,000 miles ago. Car slips terribly, only shifts by heavy footwork, leaking a bloody trail all over the place.
I've been quoted $1500.00 as the price for the complete rebuild with $900.00 of that being parts. Mechanic says it may go higher depending on the damage that has been done. I am in L.A., Calif. Is this a bit high? Should I demand a flat rate?
Thanks,
Glenn
A. It is very difficult to accurately price out a transmission rebuild. It is just one of those jobs that you don't know the extent of the damage until you open it up and inspect it. At the Mercedes Benz dealer we did not do transmission overhauls. We just ordered a remanufactured transmission from MB and installed it. The cost of rebuilding it and the cost of a remanufactured unit were so close it was just more efficient to replace than rebuild. That and the fact the factory is far better experienced and equipped to do the job insures that it comes out right the first time. I have never out in a factory remanufactured unit that was bad and didn't get a couple of hundred thousand miles from it.
If the work has not been started, you may wish to consider a factory remanufactured unit.
